Paper Stitching Tutorial
I had someone reach out asking about how I had sewed on paper. The picture she shared is above and quickly brought back to the moment. This piece was actually created in a class with Orly Avineri in Portland. Let me just say, if you have not experienced Orly….. You should. She is not your typical “art instructor” and isn’t necessarily teaching you art fundamentals; her class is more akin to soul alchemy. And allowing whatever happens and is created to just be.
Back to the sewing….
I come from a long line of seamstresses. I have always loved the feel of sewing, stitching, fabric and threads… so when I ran paper through my sewing machine…. instant love.
It felt so natural to sew on paper.
In fact, I have stuffed almost as much paper through my sewing machine as fabric. Maybe not when I was younger, but in the last few years….yes.
I like the fragileness of the work. I don’t believe things are meant to last forever.
Or at least not in their original state.
Pieces should, and may likely need to be handled with care.
Gently.
I am sure you are thinking, is she going to share how? Sheesh. I thought this was a tutorial.
The “how” is in the video.
And, there is a bonus video where I couldn’t help myself, but to “finish” the piece. I was filming after all.
Please let me know if you should have any other questions.
As always…. Thank you so much for being here. Reading. Listening. Supporting.
